Day 243: Planning Ahead

Musings of a Seamstress

I survived my second Saturday of working. I got quite a lot accomplished today. We are just starting our busy season. By busy I mean in the summer months we do about 150-200 garments a week and starting in a week or so we will be doing 1000 or more. In the midst of all of that craziness, myself and the other designers are starting to plan for our 2014-2015 catalog. We are working on coming up with new custom sequin designs and new panel dress styles. I am having fun with the new sequin patterns right now. So much fun that I started and inspiration board on Pinterest. I wish I could share them with you all but you will just have to see what makes the cut next spring when the catalog comes out.

Day 242: Work Work Work

Musings of a Seamstress

Well, it looks like I am going to have to work tomorrow  Second Saturday in a row.  :(  At least I have Monday off so I still get two days in a row off.  As for the rest of my night I am working my way through the last September issue and Season 4 of Will and Grace.   Have a good night!

Day 241: TNT Skirt

Musings of a Seamstress

I tried a new look today.  I wore a tank top underneath my dress to give myself more coverage.  I like it!  I feel like this is a little more work appropriate, not that we really have a dress code or anything.  But at least this way, my cleavage is not on display.  I think I am going to try this tank top thing under a couple of other tops I made with the same neckline as this dress.

You may remember this skirt from a couple of weeks ago.  This is the 5th version of my self drafted skirt I have made this summer.  I really love this skirt pattern.  It is super easy and very wearable.  Well, I wanted to share the skirt love with you all.

Here is a quick measurement diagram so that you too can draft your own version.  You will want to cut two of these on the fold.  I use 35″ of elastic with a 1/2″ overlap in the back.  You can use any length of elastic that fits you for this same waistline measurement I have above.  It will change how much fullness your skirt has though.  Let me know if you try this.  I would love to see your version.

Day 240: Quick Thoughts

Musings of a Seamstress

I am so in love with this skirt!  I have made 5 different versions so far and have plans to make a few more.  I was actually thinking about making another tonight, but it is getting pretty late and I have to be at work at 6am.  I can at least get it cut out though.

Day 239: A peak

Musings of a Seamstress

I am still not finished going through my September issues, but I did want to share a few of the trends I am loving so far.  I am just going to give a list for now because I still need to pin some images of my faves and I haven’t started that yet.  For now, here are a few of the ones I am loving and why.

1. Houndstooth and Plaids This one is not a surprise to me.  When it comes to fabrics I tend to go for the textured suitings like houndstooth, herringbone, tweed, and woven plaids.

2. Menswear fabrics In keeping with the one above this fits nicely.  I love feminine dresses and skirts our of mens suiting.  The juxtaposition is appealing to me.

3. Powder Pink  This color is everywhere in my magazines! I want to pair this with some dark gray.  I even have a great powder pink fabric in my stash and I have a general idea of what I want to do.

I have a few other color combinations that I am thinking about too.  I think my trends for fall will be more focused color combinations that my spring trends.

Day 238: Better late than never

Musings of a Seamstress

I finally have jumped on board with the high/low hem train!  This pleated reversible high/low skirt was on clearance at Target and I had to get it.  Since I am in the mood for fall sewing I have not wanted to make any more summer pieces and I found this at the perfect time.  When I do go shopping for clothes I try to do it in between seasons so that I can catch some great deals!  I never buy clothing at full price, ever!  This skirt was pretty comfortable to wear today.  The only problem I have is that I am not really a fan of my tank top with it.  I actually don’t have a lot in my closet that I think works with this and I will keep that in mind for next year when I get the urge to sew for spring.

Day 237: It never fails…

Musings of a Seamstress

So glad I took this pick before I ate my lunch.  I, luckily, had the foresight to know that a new white t-shirt and sloppy joes was not going to end well for me.  Sure enough, I got a big ole spot of sloppy joe right on the center front of my new stark white t-shirt!  Well, said shirt is now soaking in Oxy Clean.  If that doesn’t work, bleach!

I am slowly but surely making head way in getting through my September issues.  I finished InStyle and am now on Elle.  So far I have 9 fall trends from just InStyle that I am considering.  I am definitely going to have to whittle my final list down.  For spring I narrowed it down to 10 and I didn’t get to all of them, so I think I am going to aim for 5 or so for fall.

Day 235 & 236: The September Issue

Musings of a Seamstress

Well, yesterday while trying to update my blog I lost all internet connection!  I was not pleased at all!  Turns out it was a network issue that Eric easily resolved well after I went to bed.  Glad it was nothing major though.

Musings of a Seamstress

Today, I spent half the day at work.  First Saturday of the year!  I actually got more accomplished today with no one there than I normally do.  I vote that when my company moves next spring that I get my own office or something with a little privacy.  I will be much more productive with out the distractions of 50 different sewing machines running.

Musings of a Seamstress

This is my weekend reading, the September issues of the major fashion magazines.  After reading all the comments in regards to my last question about what everyone is sewing and seeing all these on sale I really am ready for fall, despite the almost 90 degree weather for the next few days. I spent last night and tonight reading InStyle to start with.  I am making a list of fall trends that I want to try that I will try to post some time within this next week.

Have you gotten any of the September issues yet?  What are some of the trends you are wanting to try?

Day 234: Blog Voices

Musings of a Seamstress

I would have posted much sooner today, but I choose to watch last weeks episode of Project Runway.  DRAMA!!  I can’t believe that Sandro came back to apologize.  I take what he said with a grain of sand.  I am so glad that Jeremy won the challenge.  I have been a fan of his since episode one.  Alexander’s look was also stunning!

Have you seen the Blog Voices project?  It started a couple of years ago and I did one then.  Unfortunately,  I cannot get my previous video to show up on this post, so go check it out here.  I have enjoyed watching all the new videos.  Keep posting them and I will keep watching them.

Day 233: Ready for another cool down

Musings of a Seamstress

Man, these last few weeks of cooler weather had really made me ready for fall sewing.  Today it was 88 when I left work wearing leggings!  Ugh, so freaking hot again.  I think I may have to sew another skirt or dress. What are you sewing right now?  Fall or Summer?  Talk to me, I am curious.
