Day 181: So long June

Musings of a Seamstress

On this last day of June it is actually not that warm here.  It is the temperature that I prefer, just not what you would expect going into July. I haven’t finished going through all of my pics from yesterday, so I do not have anything to show you just yet.  Hopefully sometime this coming week.  I have a couple of muslins that I want to finish sewing tonight for Eric’s Star Wars costume, so I don’t want to do a June wrap up just yet.  But looking over my to do board, I have done quite a bit this month.  I don’t think I used as much fabric as last month but I realized how much more productive I have been this year than last year.  Keeping that in mind, I do want to do a quick mid year review of my sewing goals.

1.  Complete the 2013 SWAP.  I still need to write a post about my plan, which will be focusing on my Adoption Dress as my connecting piece for both collections.  I think this SWAP will be great for me to do this year to keep me creative with how I am styling my dress.
Ha!  This didn’t happen!  Too busy sewing other things to even attempt it.  Maybe next year.

2.  Use at least 100 yards of fabric from my stash, excluding any new fabric purchases this year.  If I purchase and use it this year it will not count towards that 100 yards.
I have only used 11 yards for my self so far that has come from my stash.  I keep meaning to use more, but the new fabrics I have been buying are really more inspiring to me right now.  I still have 6 months to go to use the other 89 yards.

3.  Sew more for Eric.  Last year I sewed him 1 pair of pj pants all year!  He has been asking me to make him a suit for awhile now and I may attempt that tailoring feat this year.  I have been getting suiting fabric from my current job, for free, to make my first men’s suit attempt with.  That way if it doesn’t work I am not out a lot of money and nice fabric.
Well, I made him a new vest back in February.  Other than that I have made him a pair of Sith pants for his Star Wars costume and the two muslins I will be finishing tonight.  I have bought more fabric to make him dress shirts and vests though.  Good intentions…

4. Sew a swimsuit for myself! I have a great idea for a suit that I have been thinking about since this past summer and I really want to try it.  Once again, I already have the fabric for it!
I actually have completed this one already!!  Thanks to an awesome sewing dare from Leila and the Swim Along that is ending today.  Now I want to make a couple more.

5.  Sew a my winter coat for next winter.  I have had the fabric for this since last year and haven’t gotten around to it.  I am thinking about starting a coat sew-along in August or September for anyone who wants to make a coat as well.  I haven’t done this yet.  At the start of the year I was too over winter to even want to start this project.  I have everything I need and will probably get started on this in August or September when I am excited about fall fashion again.

Looks like I have quite a bit of work left to do in the last 6 months of this year to meet some more of my goals.  I am hopeful that I can do this.  I also hope that I can use more fabric than I purchase this year.  I have been purchasing quite a bit these last couple of months.

Day 180: An Outing of Galactic Proportions

Musings of a Seamstress

Yay! It’s the weekend! Since it is supposed to be in the 70’s all weekend and I knew we would be in an air conditioned building today I wore my coral sweater that looks really red in this photo.  That’s what happens when you have a point and shoot camera and poor after 5pm lighting.  Also, I am wearing my gold sewing machine necklace that you can barely see only if you know it is there.  Aghh!  This is why I want a good DSLR camera.

Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination

Eric and I did go to the Star Wars exhibit today at the State Museum.  It…was…awesome!!!  I am going to do a separate post for it since I have 150+ from this exhibit and another 100 from walking around the rest of the museum and the canal to edit.   I got some okay pics of costume details that will be very helpful while I finish up our costumes.

Day 179: Same old, same old

Musings of a Seamstress

Today has been pretty relax compared to yesterday!  Nothing exciting.  Tomorrow Eric and I are going to the Star Wars: Imagination Meets Science exhibit at the State Museum.  I need to do some up close and personal research with the actual costumes used for the movies.  I will have quite a bit to write about tomorrow.  I will probably end up doing a separate post for the exhibit from my regular daily post.  Until then I will be sewing up muslins for Eric’s Sith costume to check for fit and possibly start a dress for myself.

Day 178: I’m late. I’m late. So very late.

Musings of a Seamstress

Today has been quite the eventful little day!

We decided it was best that we go to The French Seam and the Super Jo-Ann’s.  It was time well spent.  Then Eric and I had a mini progressive dinner date.  We had appetizer, salad and main course at one restaurant and then went to a different one to have dessert.  It was quite nice!

Fabric Addict

At The French Seam I picked up the latest creativity challenge pack.  It consists of 3 – 1 yard cuts of coordinating cottons that I have to then make a garment out of.  This contest is in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair this year.  And the winner gets a $100 gift card to The French Seam.  I am so in.  I like the pack I picked.  I thought the flower prints had a very vintage late 60’s/early 70’s vibe.  I am not exactly sure how my garment will work but I have a very general idea of what I want to do.

Fabric Addict

At Jo-Ann’s I got a few pieces.  First is 3 1/4 yds of the white cotton with bold flowers.  One of my top 10 trends for spring/summer is a bright white with bold water color flowers and this fits pretty darn well for that! I know exactly what pattern  I want to use and hope to make this in July.  I also got 1 1/2 yard piece of black/yellow/white plaid chiffon.  I am not sure what I will use it for yet, but I could not pass it up for $2..50 per yard.  The bottom one is something very different for me.  It is 3 yds of a brown and pink chiffon that has feathers and flowers.  It is also a boarder print.  The only problem I have with the boarder is it’s black and I am not a fan of black and brown together.  This one was also $2.50 per yard.  I want to use it for a loose flowy top.  I think I have a pattern in mind for it, but I do not own it yet.

Day 177: A little bit of this and a little bit of that

Musings of a Seamstress

I  hope you, my lovely readers, are having a good day!  Today has been okay for me!  I have a bit of odds and ends that I need to take care of in my post today.

First, if you have not started following me through Bloglovin’ please do so before Monday!  I don’t want to loose you all when Google Reader disappears.

Second, I realized that I had not done a June giveaway.  Fail on my part.  I will just have to make up for it in July.

Third, I still have not posted a review on my dress from almost two weeks ago.  I will try to get some pictures of just that dress on me tomorrow to write a review of it.

Day 176: Childhood Dreams

  • Musings of a Seamstress

Today’s sponsor theme of Childhood Dreams is brought to you by Rain of Weathering Storm.  On choosing the theme she had this to say:

“On a deeper level, I think childhood dreams say a lot about a person. Did you dream of adventure? Of fame? Of being helpful? And how did those dreams translate into your adult life.”

I really like this theme!  I have posted this a couple of years ago, but I have always wanted to be a fashion designer!  Like since I was seven!  I remember very vividly, hand sewing Barbie clothes with my mom and sister.  Cinderella was my absolute favorite Disney movie because the mice and birds sew a dream gown for her.  My sister and I used to play dress up with bed sheets.  I loved being the

“designer” and “dressing” my sister in a fabulous “gown”.  When I got into middle school and then throughout high school I would endlessly sketch different outfits.  I got my fist sewing machine in high school that has since been gifted to a few different people learning to sew.

Luckily, studying fashion design has improved all of my early skills to the point were I am at today.  I now have a job where I get to do what I have always wanted and I love it so much that I do it at home as well!   I really thought the best way to illustrate my dream was to take it literally. So, to represent this theme I used the new skirt pattern I drafted this past weekend.  I added pockets to this version as well as a contrasting boarder. The main fabric is all sorts of scissors and the contrasting is a print of pattern pieces and sewing tools.  For this skirt I used 1 1/2 yards of the navy scissor cotton that is a recent purchase this year and 1/2 yard of the gray print pattern pieces cotton from the stash

Day 175: It’s Refreshing

Musings of a Seamstress

Now that summer is finally here I decided it was time to bring out the Sierra Mist dress!  I actually have enough of this fabric left that I could make another one if someone would like one or I could make a swimsuit and still have some after that.  Hmmm…decisions decisions.  Well, at least it is not one that I have to make today!

I am excited about tomorrows outfit because it will be a sponsor day!  Yay!  I really like the theme behind tomorrows too.  I have another sponsor day coming later in the week too!  Probably on Saturday or Sunday.  Not sure yet as I am not sure of all the details.  I am excited to be doing two sponsor days this week though.

Remember you too can be a sponsor by donating at least $10.00 to our adoption fund.  Just click on the secure PayPal button or the Go Fund Me widget on the right hand sidebar.  You will get that totally awesome sponsor badge and get to pick my theme for a day.  If your theme is lobsters,  I will wear some form of lobster awesomeness!  So what are you waiting for?  Go ahead and give me a crazy theme!

Day 174: Siths and Socks

Musings of a Seamstress

Today is a sewing and laundry day.  I have neglected the laundry for far too long and must attend to it today.    On the up side, it made me realize I have a lot of clothes.  I think I will be going through them soon and figuring out what I can part with to put in the adoption garage sale that I have yet to plan.  I really need to get on that.  Sewing wise, I am working on Eric’s Star Wars costume.  I have already drafted and made the pants last month.  I am semi-drafting an undershirt pattern today since the pattern only has a dickey under the tunic.  The costume snob in me cannot handle a dickey.  I just cannot do that, it’s like costume cheating.  I am using the dickey pattern and drafting the shirt around it.  That way I still get the correct angles for the neckline plus the benefit of having a full shirt.  I will try to take some pictures as I do this and, hopefully, some of the finished undershirt with the pants I drafted.  For now a storm is rolling in so I am going to get as much done as I can just in case the power goes out.

Day 173: And now a new game

Musings of a Seamstress

I must say, I am loving today’s look!  I made this skirt last night on a whim.  I have been wanting to draft a simple elastic waist skirt for months now but finally did it last night.  It took me all of 5 minutes to draft and 30 minutes to sew.  I used 2 remnants that were each 3/4 yard.  I got them last week from Jo-Ann’s for $4.19 a piece.  All in all $8.38 + 35 minutes was totally worth it for a new skirt.  I have a few more of these that I want to make and at least one of them will include pockets.  I am even thinking a dress based off of the overall look of today’s outfit needs to happen for next year.

On another note, I told Eric I am starting a new game.  Do you watch How I Met Your Mother?  Awesome, me too!  Remember that episode where Marshall invents a new game, Was I drunk or a kid?  I know so funny! Well my new game is going to be called Did I make or buy this.  Eric has been saying lately that he cannot tell anymore if my new clothes are things that came from the store or my sewing room.  Which, I guess is a good thing right?

I forgot to mention some stats about yesterday’s Captain America costume.  I used a total of 3 1/2yards of fabric.  Only 1/2 yard was from the stash and it was white scuba that I used to line the bodice.  The other 3 yards were what I got from work specifically for this.  The pattern for the dress was drafted by me too.  I can’t say that I will ever make another version of this dress, but it was still fun to draft this one.

Day 172: Saving the world one costume at a time

Musings of a Seamstress

Today at work we had our company picnic and had our company picture taken, so everyone wore matching black t-shirts.  You can hardly tell what I am wearing because everything was so dark, but I have on the black t-shirt, a pair of dark denim self made shorts and my navy dress.  Of course I had to spice up all the dark, so I accessorized with my red peep toe heels!  At the company picnic we had a red white and blue themed costume contest.

Musings of a Seamstress

I decided to go as the female Captain America!  This is the dress that I patterned out last weekend.  I would say it turned out pretty darn awesome!  I didn’t win first place, but the person who did wore an amazing Betsy Ross colonial costume complete with the first American flag replica.  She totally deserved first!  It was an impressive costume for being made in two weeks.  I wish I had gotten a picture of it.  I may actually wear this again to the new Comic Con that is coming to Indy next year.  I will have to make some red gauntlets and a mask of sorts to go with this though.
