Day 59

2.28.13 edit

Not much to talk about today.  Or well I guess more accurately not much I want to talk about today.  I have spent the month sewing things for others and I am glad it is over.  I am going to be a selfish seamstress for a little bit!  I spend all day at work creating things for others and I just do not want to have to do it at home right now.  The only exception to this is Eric because sewing for him is fun!  I just need to start telling people “No” when they ask if I can do something for them.

Day 58

2.27.13edit

I know I know I am terribly late at posting today.  I have a very very fantastically awesome reason though!  I have spent the entire night fighting to edit a video.  My edit is sketchy but the video is just fantastic!  Today my office did a Harlem Shake!  Only after we filmed it and I started trying to edit it, did I find the Harlem Shake app.  It would have made this whole thing a hundred times easier.  But as it stands here is the Rivar’s Harlem Shake!  Enjoy!!

Day 57

2.26.13edit

Not the best of pics today.  I only got to take one picture before my camera battery died.   This evening I am working on sewing up a few random requests from others.  After this I am going to focus on being a selfish seamstress for a bit.  I need to get more things sewn for my self.  Spring is coming and I need skirts to go with this dress!

Day 56

I love this belt!  I need some more thick belts like this.  Too bad I am not adept at leather tooling.  Pretty casual today as with pretty much everyday!  I did wear one of my current favorite necklaces!  I got it for Christmas and it is a scissors charm.  Love it!!  Also, can we talk about how red my hair looks in the close up picture?!?!  That is like, almost, Debra Messing red!  I promise it is unfortunately not that red in real life. To0 bad to, because that is exactly the shade of red I would like it to be.

Instead of watching the Oscars last night I did some sewing and planning for my spring wardrobe.  I also spent some time thinking about what else we, Eric and I, can do to speed our adoption along.  Things have been pretty stagnant in the financial department.  I know back in October I said I was giving up control, and for the most part I have.  I have not allowed the burden of finances to control my almost every waking thought.  To be completely honest, it has been nice not to be so stressed about it.  I have just let it go with the attitude of it will come.    Problem is, it’s not.  I know, I know.  Patience young Padawan.  Maybe I have been too lax about it though.  I have been neglecting my Bows for Adoption shop for sometime now and I have not actively been making any new hair bows or other bow themed items like I had intended.  So here is my goal/plan for March.

I want to raise $400 in March.  That is a huge goal for us! To do this I am going to do the following

  • I am going to start making a several more things for me to wear for The Adoption Dress Project that I can put in my shop over the next couple of weeks.
  • I am going to stop making things for other people, except Eric, for free.  I have a bad habit of giving away my time, skills and even personal stash to friends for nothing in return.  I would be okay with this if we weren’t trying to raise money for our adoption.
  • I am going to promote my shop and blog more.  I had a great opportunity to do this on Saturday that I just avoided.  There was a group of cheerleaders that came into the restaurant Eric and I were having lunch in and instead of talking to them and giving them my card, we just left.

I will also need your help to reach this goal!  Please consider helping us by sharing our story and blog with your friends and family.  Please consider buying a bow or making a donation to help us along.  In return I promise our everlasting gratitude of helping to bring our future child home with us.

Thank you!

Day 55: My top 10 spring trends

2.24.13edit

Today’s look includes another Charming Charlie necklace.  This time it is a multi-strand purple beaded one.   I love the look of multi-strand necklaces! I also decided to wear my contacts today because I was flipping through pictures so far this year and I have only worn my contacts two other times.  I need to start wearing them more often again.

As I said yesterday I am ready for spring!  So I spent quite a bit of time on Pinterest yesterday trying to figure out what looks I want to try for spring.  As a result I have narrowed it down to my top 10 must have trends for spring/summer.  Note all of these images came from Pinterest.  You can view my entire spring/summer look book here to find the original source for each of these.

1)Victorian Floral Print Shorts

Floral shorts #FlowerPower #ColorMix #SummerOutfitSpring is in Bloom ShortsWhy?  Well, they are just fun, plain and simple.  They are definitely different from anything that is currently in my wardrobe and that is part of the fun of this dress project.  I get to try things that I normally would not try.  I do actually already have some similar type of floral print cottons in my stash that will work great for this too!

2) Colored denim skinnies

denim & yellow jeansmint & navy ... love this comboCoral and NavyWhy?  I have realized over the last couple of years that I am a blue denim jeans kinda girl and I want to break out of that!  Last summer I wore lots of dresses and skirts.  This past fall I fell in love with skinnies.  Being skinnies, I can definitely change my style up in a very colorful way that is totally fashionable.  I have actually been lusting over a pair of yellow skinnies that I have noticed on two McCall’s pattern covers, M6604 and M6517. Then last week I found that exact yellow denim at Jo-Ann’s.

3)White with bright colored florals

Prabal Gurung for TargetLike watercolor. Sigh <3Why?  These are so swoon worthy I may just faint now!  The first image is from the new Prabal Gurung collection for Target.  There are so many pieces that I love in his collection.  I love the contrast between the clean pristine white and the very bold colors.

4) Sheer Pastel Button ups with black contrast

Sheer blouse & skinny denim from Simply Vera Vera Wang. #KohlsWhy?  It screams sexy to me but in a non-overtly way.  I am really a fan of the idea of doing a mint green chiffon with the black.  Mint green is not a color I have currently in my wardrobe and I would be willing to give it a try.  I have a ton of white chiffon so I will probably end up making at least one white one as well.

5) White lace cover up

love the lace cardigan.lace blazer. Why?  I think these pieces have a very girlie innocence about them that I just adore.  I am not sure which way I want to go with this though.  I really like both the cardigan with white knit detailing and the completely lace blazer.  Maybe I will just end up having to try both!

6) Nauticals

#Cute #comfy #casual #dressy #nautical #sailor #boat #navy #blue #red #white #tan #jeans #mix #match #phone #case #wedges #sperrys #ballet #flats #nails #belt #bracelets #rope #purse #anchor #bow #knot #fun #summer #nights #memmers #sunglasses #belted #shirt #sweater #style #fashion #stripes <3Nautical fashion is always cute! nautical-style-fashionblog.comNautical striped sailor shorts.Why? Killing me!! Put me on a boat right now!!  I have had a deep and abiding love for nautical stripes for the last 4 or 5 years now.  I think it is safe to say that nauticals are becoming a spring/summer staple.  They are perfectly divine and totally scream all American! I am planning on doing at least one bathing suit with this trend too.

7)Maxi Dresses and Skirts

great dress!Kimono-sleeve maxidressWhy?  I jumped on this trend last year and fell head over heals for it.  Maxis are a great easy stylish piece to have in your wardrobe.  They are super flattering on pretty much everyone.

8) Retro styles with themed prints

The Nana dress by Dolly Clackett, via FlickrButterick B5603measuring tape fabricWhy?  Words cannot express how much I love these fun retro inspired dresses from Roisin, or better known as Dolly Clackett in the #sewcialist circle.  How fun and kitchy!  These are definitely unique dresses to make you stand out!  I have secret plans for what I want to do with this.

9) Toile Dress

toile dresstoile dress Why?  Toile is so unexpected for a dress, that’s why!  This could easily be lumped in with the previous trend I want to try but since I have my super secret surprise for that I am counting this as separate.  I love the blue toile used in each of these but I was also thinking a red toile could be fun with my adoption dress.

10) black and white chevron

black and white chevron print dress with peach bottom!Cute #dress with #chevron detailWhy?  Chevron is a very bold graphic print.  Especially in black and white. I don’t know if I want to do a full dress in chevron or just a portion of a dress like these two pictures.  I am thinking that a full chevron dress may be too overpowering.

Well that’s it.  Those are my personal top 10 must try trends for spring.  Do you have any trends that you are dying to try?  Let me know.

Day 54

I love weekends where I don’t have any concrete plans and this is definitely one of them!  Eric will be gone for the evening and I plan on spending some quality time in my sewing room!  I  have a few projects I want to finish up, including my #oonapants.  I really wanted to do the #sewcoatbuddy  coat, but this crazy Indiana weather has really put me in the mood for spring!  So, I am going to start planning my spring wardrobe, which will include some Pinterest research and pulling patterns and fabrics from the stash.

The totally awesome Rachel from House of Pinheiro is hosting another fun swap that I am thrilled to participate in!!  Not that I don’t already have a lot of sewing that I need to get done but the theme of the swap was just too awesome for me to pass up.  The theme for this years International Craft Swap is…NAUTICAL!!! We won’t receive our swap partners information for another couple of weeks but I already have a few different ideas as to what I would like to make.  I encourage all crafters to check out her blog and join in on the fun!  You only have until March 3rd to registrar, so make sure you do it now!!!

Day 53

I am wearing another awesome Charming Charlie necklace today!  It has red crystals on a silver chain with other strands of chain.  Love it!!

Driving this morning was terrible, even with an hour delay.  It took me close to an hour to get to work when it normally takes me between 30-35 minutes.  The country roads were definitely not salted nor plowed.  Plus freezing fog did not help either.  At any rate, I got there safely!

I do not know what is going on with my camera.  It has been taking some funky pictures lately.  I am wondering if maybe there is still sand in it from when I dropped it on the beach this past year.  Maybe one day soon I will be able to get the DSLR camera I have always dreamed of having!  It is on my list of requirements for improving my blog and my Etsy shop as well as a must for when we do finally adopt!  I think those reasons for wanting one now are perfectly justifiable.  Plus, I really like photography so I know I would use it often!  Now, just to make it happen!

Day 52

I must apologize for the lateness of this post.  If you tried to visit earlier today you probably received a notice saying this site was not available.  I am not sure what happened or exactly how long it was down.  But thankfully it is finally up.  Also, I need to apologize for the poor quality of this photo.  In my camera it looked fine, but once I put it on the computer it looked all splotchy.  I guess it is just an off day.  Oh well there is always tomorrow.

Speaking of, here in Indiana we are getting hit with a winter ice/snow/sleet storm tonight and tomorrow morning.  No fun!  Hopefully it isn’t too bad.  I have quite a few things that need to get done at work tomorrow.  We shall see.

Day 51

Today was an exhausting day!  I worked a 9.5 hour day between the office and the photo shoot.  This doesn’t include all the driving back an forth.  I will for sure be going to bed when I am done writing this.

Media preview

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you have already seen this, but these are my #Oonapants in their nearly finished state.  I tried them on last night and the skin tight high waisted spandex legging is not for me.  I have got too much belly going on for it to work.  So I am going to cut them down to have a regular waist.  Hopefully I should be able to get them done tomorrow evening to wear over the weekend.  I am not sure I am brave enough to wear them in public.

B5882On another note, why did I give up pattern buying for Lent?  Look at the new Gertie patterns for Butterick!!! Simply fantastic! Those pants are definitely on my must sew list!
