Monthly Archives: January 2013

Day 31

I have made it through 31 whole days of this project! One month down and eleven more to go!  Bring it on!  For this most wonderful  last day of Jungle January,  I am rocking my new leopard floral cardigan!  Let me tell you I love love love this cardi and as evidenced by the several compliments I got at work so do others.  Animal print is definitely something that is out of my comfort zone because it feels so loud.  But this month’s challenge has really helped me to step outside of that.

M5978

Pattern Description:
MISSES’ CARDIGANS AND TOP: Cardigans have three-quarter or full length sleeves and stitched hems; cardigan A has purchased lace trim; cardigan B has jewel stones; cardigan C has pearls; cardigan D has self-fabric appliques; sleeveless top E has narrow hem finishing at neck, armhole and lower edges.
Pattern Sizing:
XS-XL: I made a Large
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
For the most part. I made so many changes that the details are different but the the shape is the same.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Absolutely. I briefly skimmed through them once and that was it. The construction is very simple, even for a beginning seamstress.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love most everything about this. I think the best part though is that it is such a basic cardigan that the design possibilities are endless. The only thing I disliked was the facing.
Fabric Used:
I am not 100% sure what I used but it was 1.5yards of a synthetic sweater weight knit of some variety and 1/2 yard of ribbed black knit.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Oh where to begin! Because I didn’t really want to add the facing and other reviewers didn’t like it either I decided to bind my center front and neck edge with black ribbed fabric. Then I decided that just that binding was not enough of the black. So I added a 5.5″ banding, folded in half, to each 3/4 length sleeve and the hem. It definitely helped to “contain” the print. I also eliminated the buttons. Originally I was going to add two 7/8″ buttons instead of the 5-5/8″ called for buttons. But after playing around with my buttonholer and some scrap I decided not to add them because the buttonholes put too much stress on the fabric causing it to ripple. Plus, the buttons were a bit to heavy for the fabric to support them. It’s unfortunate because I had found the most perfect buttons to go with this too.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
In a heartbeat! This went together very quickly and without any problems. Unfortunately, it is now OOP, but if you are lucky enough to own it make it! If you do not have it I recommend the new McCall’s 6708
It is close enough that you could make it work.
Conclusion:
I love this pattern and I cannot believe it took me almost two years to make it. I always looked at it but was intimidated by it. Now I plan on making several more. While the reviews on here have been pretty great for it I can see why it is OOP. None of the reviews on here show it made how any of the 4 versions on the envelope are. I think the new McCall’s 6708 will be a better seller and I plan on picking it up to try next time they are on sale.

Day 30

Today’s look includes a me made white burnout paisley top! You cannot really see it well in this picture but the sleeves of the top did not sit right underneath the dress. I don’t think I will wear it underneath again.  Also, today my promotion was officially announced at work!  I am now part of the design team!  Which means I will be designing show choir costumes for the 2013 season! It’s about time I used my degree!

Day 29

Pretty simple today.  Gray knit cardigan over the dress with black leggings.  The necklace was a gift from my sister from Charming Charlie.  If you have never heard of them, like me, you should check them out.  My sister gifted me several different pieces from them for Christmas.

In other news, I am hoping to finish my cardigan tonight.  I didn’t do anything with it last night until 10:45 pm when I decided to sew on the black trim around the neck and center fronts.  Next I am going to add cuffs and shorten the hem length and add a waistband instead.  Hopefully I will be able to show it off tomorrow.  I really want to get started on my next project, which is going to be another vest for Eric!!  It’s about time I sewed something for him again.

Day 28

You cannot tell it from the picture but I am sporting my DIY brown leggings today!  They held up pretty well!  There was a bit of stretching in the knee area that I am hoping will be fixed once washed.  I never pre-washed this fabric so I am pretty sure it will shrink down to where I want it.Also, I did not finish my cardigan last night.  Something was just feeling fuddy-duddy about it, so I set it to the side for the evening.  I have been thinking about it and my #sewbuddycoat all day at work.  I came to the conclusion that I am going to add a solid black knit binding around the neck and center front opening of the cardigan and one single 3/4″ button as opposed to the pattern’s recommend 5 – 5/8″.  Hopefully that will help how I feel about it.

Day 27: Jungle January

First I must say Happy Founders Day to all my lovely Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Sisters! We have a very strong 143 year old tradition that I am proud to be a part of! Today also marks me jumping in on the Jungle January action!  Today I am wearing an infinity scarf made of 17″ pink and white zebra knit that I originally used to make someone else a dress.  This single scarf is helping me out 3 fold!  First it counts for Jungle January, second it counts towards the Stash Busting January challenge of Itty Bits and third it helps me with my own resolution of using 100 yards of stash fabric for myself!  Work smarter not harder!

Yesterday I also made a few other things.  I used 1.25 yards of brown knit that has been in my stash for several years to make leggings using M6173.  Do you know how hard it is to find brown leggings at the stores?  I found mostly black or bright colored jeggings or brown tights.  So I sucked it up and cut into this fabric which I had been intending to use for a shirt.  I will most likely be wearing these tomorrow so for today you get a photo of them folded up and waiting.

Since I already had the brown threads on both my machines I decided I might as well tackle another brown project.  I cut into the leopard floral sweater knit I bought earlier this month.  I am making a cardigan using   OOP M5978.  This is what I will be sewing up today.  I had 2.25 yards of this and the pattern only requires 1.75 yards.

Which means I had the perfect .5 yard amount left to make another infinity scarf.  So the cardigan and this scarf are my second and third entries for Jungle January.  After I get done with the sweater today I may start my new coat thanks to #sewcoatbuddy on twitter!!  I couldn’t resist and it will allow me to use a good chunk of stash fabric and complete another resolution to make my new winter coat.  Hopefully that should be easy enough that I can have it done by next weekend.

Day 26

I am kinda loving the way this red sweater helps create a “V” on the navy dress.  I am spending a good chunk of time today in the sewing studio!  I have a Jungle January item that I will be posting about tomorrow!

Line Art

Other than that I am completely in love with the new Vogue patterns for men.  Eric has been asking me to make him some unique dress shirts and V8889 is just that!  View B has tucks up near the shoulders which add a cool visual interest.  Plus the shirt is fitted, which is always a good thing.

V8890                                               V1753

V8890 is also on my must get list.  It is a more modernly cut mens’ suit than it’s predecessor, V1753.  Let’s not even talk about the terribly dated styling of V1753!  Unfortunately, Jo-Ann’s does not have any of the new patterns in yet and their Vogue sale ends today.  I guess they will just have to wait.

Day 25

Remember awhile ago when I said to keep your fingers crossed for me about work?  Yeah, well, that awesome thing we were crossing our fingers for happened yesterday!!!  I am super excited to announce that I got a promotion and I have only been there since the last week of October.  I don’t have all the specifics just yet, but I will be apart of my company’s design team!!  I love that I am getting to use my degree and do what I enjoy doing.

I am excited that the weekend is here!  I have some major sewing plans for tomorrow and Sunday that involve me getting in on the Jungle January action.  I also have a copy of Magic Mike that I fully intend on enjoying while Eric is out with his friends tomorrow night. What does everyone else have planned, sewing wise, for this weekend?

Day 24

People have started asking the one question I knew was coming.  “Are you sick of the dress yet?”  My answer is no and here’s why.

1) I have more clothes than I actually realize.  Other than repeating my skinnies and a few different sweaters I have not worn anything else twice.

2) It is really fun to try different outfits and combinations.  I have so many ideas for spring of trends that I want to try.

Day 23

It was pretty dark out by the time I got home to take my picture for the day and as a result have terrible contrast on my outfit!  I am wearing a dark purple cowl neck sweater underneath the dress.  I am also wearing turquoise earrings and bracelets.  I really miss the days when it would be 5:00 and still daylight.  I am eager for spring weather and clothes!  My mind has been racing the last few days with different ideas for things to add to my spring wardrobe.  I will have to do a post soon about what I am planning on sewing.

Day 22:

So nothing exciting happened today.  Went to work, ran some errands, went to dinner.  That’s pretty much it!  I am feeling very boring.

In sewing related news I finished this costume last night.  It is supposed to look very 1950’s housewife for the Drag Pin-up photo shoot.  I will post photos from the shoot once I get them.  The dress itself is made using vintage double pique fabric and vintage lining that was gifted to me.  Underneath the skirt are 3 layers of bright pink tulle to add fullness and give it contrast.  I love this dress and now want to make one for myself!  Too bad I don’t have anymore of that fabric.
