Sewing Bucket List

I almost made it to bed this evening at a reasonable time but then I made the mistake of checking Blogger, which I haven’t done in a couple of days.  Once I start reading blogs, I am pretty much lost for the next hour or so.  Well wouldn’t you know it, I came across a post that just made me have to write my own. You know what I mean,  I am sure it has happened to most of us sewing bloggers.  If it doesn’t make you want to write it probably makes you want to go and create something regardless of how late it is or how tired you are.

Anyways, Victoria over at Ten Thousand Hours of Sewing has and interesting post about what is on her sewing bucket list that I found quite interesting.  To tell you the truth, this is something that I have put quite a bit of thought of my own into for the last few years since watching the movie The Bucket List. Not surprisingly a lot of my goals are on her list too.  Now I am only going to post the ones that I have yet to accomplish but with every stitch I make I am one step closer to all of them.

1. Shop the Garment District in NYC.  More specifically Mood.
2. Shop the flagship Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, IL.  I have been to one of the other stores but I want to go to the Vogue mecca!
3.  Audition, a second time, for Project Runway and make it on the show.
4.  Attend NYC Fashion Week.  I would love to see Anna Sui or Betsey Johnson.
5.  Shop the Fashion District in LA.
6.  Attend the Sewing and Stichery Expo in Puyallup, WA.
7.  Write a craft/sewing book. Writing this blog is helping me to come up with ideas for a book.
8.  Teach my future daughter to sew.  Step one: The Adoption Project.
9.  Go to Rome and buy some fantastic suiting material.
10.  Get my Masters in Apparel Design.
11.  Teach sewing/design at either the college level or at a sewing shop.
12.  Have a costume shop at both the Ohio Renaissance Festival and the Old West Festival.

Does anyone else have a sewing bucket list?  If so, what is on yours?

Mommy Wars

I came across this interesting article on The Huffington Post site about Mommy Wars.  The lovely Kristen Howerton of Rage Against the Minivan, talks about why she is choosing not to participate in all the recent debates about breastfeeding and attachment parenting since the cover of Time magazine came out.  Below is a snippet of  her article.  I encourage you to check out the full story!

When it comes to issues of motherhood, there is one issue I care about: some kids don’t have one. All of these petty wars about the choices of capable, loving mothers is just a lot of white noise to me, Quite honestly, I’m often astonished at the non-essential parenting issues I see moms getting upset about. Particularly when there are so many kids in this world not being parented at all.

MMM update

Day 10

I have been so busy with other projects this past week that I haven’t posted anything about how I am doing with MMM.  In fact, I have been so busy I haven’t even remembered to take pictures.  I am still making sure to wear at least one different item a day though!  Unfortunately,  I probably won’t post any more about it unless I make myself something new.  But with the way this past week has gone I doubt that will happen.  :(

What have I been so busy with you ask.

Day 12

Why, sure I have some time to tell you really quick.  My town has an annual fireworks display the weekend before the 4th of July.

Umm…Sarah, it is only mid May.  What does 4th of July have to do with being busy now?

Yes, I know it is only May, but I promise I am getting to the point. Anyways,  said Fireworks Festival will be held on June 25th this year and there will be craft booths there.  I signed up to be one of those vendors!  This will be my very first show and I could not be more excited!  That being said there is a lot of work I need to get done before I am ready.

First task was to finally jump into the new age and get a freaking smartphone.  I ordered the Square, so I can accept debt/credit card payments directly through my new phone.  The phone arrived yesterday and I could not put it down.  I am kinda a serious internet junkie.  It’s a problem that I am working on sorta.

Second task is to create a lot more product!  Currently I have 32 items in my Etsy shop but I will need a lot more.  I am working on a line of Patriotic bows just for this show.  Some of them will be listed in my Etsy shop as well.  Right now I have about 30 more cut out and ready to be sewn.

Shouldn’t you have done that yesterday instead of playing with your new phone?

Shhhh…Zip it inner monologue! But yes, yes, I should have done that yesterday.  Other than that, my next tasks include finding a good white 10×10 canopy tent, making some sort of shop banner I can hang up to announce myself and figuring out how I am going to display everything.  I am open to suggestions on all 3 of those things, but mostly the canopy tent.  If you have ever done a show before please let me know the good and the bad of tents!

Monika’s Musings

Monika of Monika’s Musings guest posted over at Attempting Agape today!  It is a wonderfully written post about Mother’s Day from the view point of a Birth Mother.  Attempting Agape is actually doing a whole week long series of posts for Mother’s Day that I recommend checking out.  If you haven’t yet read Monika’s blog, recommend it too.  As a Hopeful Adoptive Parent I want to make sure I understand exactly what adoption is like from a Birth Mother’s point of view and Monika is helping me to do that.

Jeans: Mossimo for Target, $28.00
Necklace: Meijer, $7.00
Bow: Bows for Adoption
Shoes: Payless, $9.00

 Day 9
Top: McCall’s 6120
Jacket: Converse for Target, $13.00
Jeans: Mossimo for Target, $28.00
Total outfit cost: $41.00
Today was a stay at home sort of day so I didn’t wear shoes, jewelry or make-up.

Day 6 & 7

Day 6
Top: Mossimo for Target: $7.00
Jeans: Mossimo for Target, $28.00
Sweater: self drafted pattern
Shoes: Payless, $9.00
Hair bow: Bows for Adoption
Total outfit cost: approximately $44.00
I don’t think I have blogged about this sweater previously.  I did not knit it myself like most people ask me.  I have a couple other self drafted sweater shrugs out of the same fabric just different styles.  I am going to try to get together a tutorial for them here soon to post for everyone.
Day 7
 Dress: M5974
Sweater: Sears, $16.00
Cuff: Meijer, $2.00
Shoes: Payless, $9.00
Total outfit cost: approximately $27.00
For this dress originally being intended as a muslin to test fit it sure has gotten it’s fair share of wear over the last two years.  This is one of my only projects to go from muslin to wearable garment.  I have to say that I am quite pleased with that.

Days 4 & 5

Day 4

Yesterday was a pretty hectic day.  I had to finish alterations on a prom dress, prepare for our adoption garage sale fundraiser, and run about a dozen errands.  Because I was spending a majority of the time cleaning our garage and sorting through stuff for the sale I wanted to wear something that I was not too attached to.

Top: TNT M5436
Tank Top: Old Navy $8.00
Jeans: Target $28.00
Sandals: Old Navy $1
Total cost: $37.00
This is actually the very first version of M5436 I ever made and that was about 6 years ago.
Day 5
Top: B5355
Tank Top: Dots $5.00
Jeans: Target $28.00
Sandals: JC Penney $20.00
Hair Bow: Bows For Adoption

Total cost $53.00
Today was the first day of our garage sale so I wanted to wear something cute and comfortable, so I choose my loose fitting chiffon top.  I also wore one of my bows from Bows for Adoption to show people when I explained our adoption decision and how we are raising money.  I hope that this helps out our little shop!  On a sidenote we about the garage sale, we raised over $376 today and are hoping to do well tomorrow too.  If you want to help us in our goal, check out our adoption blog, The Adoption Project and donate through Paypal.  Or check out our Etsy shop on the side bar of this page and share it with friends and family.

Day 3

Top: Simplicity 2603, made in 2010
Cardigan: Old Navy, $16.00
Skirt: Meijer, $16.00
Sandals: JC Penneys, $20.00
Hair Piece: Thirty One, free hostess gift
Earrings: Meijer, clearance $2.50
Total cost: approximately $55.00
*Once again I made this top before I started keeping track of my fabric and what I was spending on it I am not sure how much this top cost me to make.  I do know this was a remnant that I purchase so it could not have been more than a few dollars.
I had quite a bit of fun wearing this today.  I normally am a jeans everyday kinda girl, but for this summer I have vowed to wear more dresses and skirts.  Today we had record setting heat, mid 80’s, and this skirt was perfect for it!  Jeans are just to hot to wear in the summer when I have no air conditioning, so dresses and skirts it will be.

Day 2 & a fabric purchase

Top: TNT M5436 made in 2009.
Tank Top: JC Penney’s $6.00
Jeans: Mossimo for Target $28.00
Necklace: Target $11.00
Sandals: Mossimo for Target $16.00
Total outfit cost:  around $67.00

*Since I made the top in 2009 before I started keeping track of my fabric and what I was spending on it I am not sure how much this top cost me to make.  If I remember correctly this was one of their Red Tag fabrics so it could not have cost more that $5.00.

Speaking of keeping track of fabrics,  I did go to Jo-Ann’s today and purchase two pieces.  Not that I had any possible reason to go there other than I had the day off of work.  My Fabric Mart purchase was my gateway drug.  Once I did it more purchases were sure to follow.  Anyways, what I got is 2 yards green quilting cotton with floral print and 3 yards black gingham.  The green floral is going to be for a Sorbetto Sew Along that Sara from The Pretty Pickle will be hosting later on this month.  I have had this pattern printed for a year now and have never tried it despite all the lovely versions on the blogsphere.  So, I decided this is the perfect time to do so and be able to wear it for MMM.  The gingham is going to be for a new dress shirt for Eric.  I really want to see him in a gingham dress shirt since they are on trend right now.

MMM’12 Day 1

First a little MMM’12 housekeeping.  Today is the very first day of Me-Made-May 2012!!! Yay!  I am going to do this a little different than I did for SSS’11. This time around I am going to try very very very hard to post every day this month!  I want to do a more ‘How I wore it’ type of thing.  So I will be listing everything I wore and where it’s from.  As part of my MMM’12 promise I said I would were a different handmade garment each day with no repeats.  For just a little more clarification, if I do repeat a garment it must be worn with another that is not.  I had intended to do a bit more sewing last month since I mostly only have tops for myself, but I only made myself 2 pieces.  Both of which were tops, surprise surprise!  Hopefully I will be able to get a few new things sewn this month to include as well.  We’ll see how this goes this month! {crosses fingers}

Today’s look:

Top: Color-blocked top by me, B5753 free
Bottoms: Jeans by Mossimo at Target $28.00
Necklace: Meijer $5.00 on clearance

Sadly I couldn’t get a good enough angle on myself to get my shoes in the picture but they are black patent flats from Payless for $9.00.

Total outfit cost: $42.00

This is the first time I have worn this top in public.  If you remember I was pretty on the fence about it when I finished it.  Since it has been sitting in my closet it has grown on me a little.  But today I got so many complements on it and I have come to really like it.  It is actually really really comfortable, except for the occasional scratchy sequin on the back of my neck.  This is definitely a keeper.  On a side note, it rained a lot here today so when I got home my pants were soaked.  For pure comfort I put on my black leggings and think that they also look great with this top.
