Bows For Adoption

Our Etsy shop, Bows for Adoption,  is officially open! Granted there is only one bow in there right now, which is the one pictured above,  but hopefully that will change by the end of the week. I am working on getting some basic pictures of each bow now to be able to list each bow.  Sometime in March I will have photos of each bow on models, so you can get a better idea of how each would look when worn.  Also check out our Facebook page for the shop and become a fan to learn about new bows being offered and future sales promotions.

Fundraising

Adoption is EXPENSIVE!  Just how expensive you may ask, well, so much so that it will be awhile before we can even enter the actual adoption process.  With the agency we are going through a rough estimate of expenses that we are planning for is $26,000, which is a hefty chunk of our total income.  Our estimate is based off of an information meeting we attended with IAC.  They gave us a spreadsheet of all the expenses and average costs for the state of Indiana.  As a breakdown this includes:

Initial Join Fee: $9,000
Birthparent Services: $1,560
Due at Birth: $1,560
Total = $12,220
Those are the required fees.  The initial join fee is actually broken down into 6 monthly payments.  However, if you are matched with a Birthmother during that 6 months the total $9,000 is due at that time.  So that alone means we need to have at least $9,000 in savings for us to feel comfortable starting this process.  Now, you are probably asking where that other $13,780 in expenses is coming from.  Here are the possible/probable expenses we will incur.
Networking Expenses: $300-$3,000
Medical Expenses for Birthmother: $0-$10,000
Pregnancy-Related Expenses for the Birthmother: $0-$6,000
Travel: $100-$5,000
Legal Expenses: $1,500
Total = $1,900 – $25,500
 The networking expenses are definitely something we will need to do.  It covers our adoption website, 1-800 number and brochures about us that are sent out to prospective Birthparents.  We do not expect to spend the full $3,00 here but we do expect to spend a good deal.  The medical expenses and pregnancy-related expenses are something that we are unsure about at this point only because it requires us to be matched and know what the Birthmothers situation is.  Travel is also something that will be required but at this point we are unsure of how much.  We are fairly certain that we want to adopt out of state, so that will definitely require a few flights or driving as well as hotel stays. The legal expenses are for finalizing the adoption so that is a definite too.  Our first goal is to raise $10,000.  This will cover the initial join fee, as well as have a little bit left over to get us started with the networking things we need.  We have come up with a few different ideas for how to raise this money that I want to share with everyone.

Bows for Adoption is an Etsy shop that I am working very hard to get set up.  Basically, the idea for this came about last year.  A coworker wore a couple of bows to work that she had made from scrap fabrics.  They were so adorable I asked her to show me how she made them.  To my surprise they were incredibly easy to make too!  Since then I have been making a few bows every work day just for the heck of it. Originally, I was going to put them in my first Etsy shop, Mae’s Garden.  Then Eric and I began talking more seriously about how we were going to pay for our adoption.  That was when I knew what to do!  I started a separate shop just for this.  All of the bows are made from scraps of fabrics that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.  The only things I purchase new for these are the headbands and hair clips.  So far, I have made over 60 unique bows.  I have been collecting fabric scraps from work so I can continue to make more.  Within the next month I should have better photos taken to use for each listing and be able to officially open Bows for Adoption.  Each bow will cost anywhere from $5.00-$10.00.  All of the proceeds from each sale will go directly into our adoption savings account.

 Other than this shop we are wanting to have a garage sale or two this summer.  We are asking friends and family who have things that they are wanting to get rid of to donate them to us for this.  We are also going to have some info about us and our adoption plan with a donation jar just in case people want to help contribute.

We also need to look into restaurant fundraising.  I read about a few people who have partnered with a restaurant for an evening. The idea is that anyone who comes in and purchases during that evening a small portion of their sale will go towards our adoption.  I actually have a friend in the area that has done this for an organization she is apart of.  This could definitely be a fun way to talk to everyone who is supporting us.  This would probably come after the garage sale.  That way we could hand out fliers about this as an upcoming event to everyone who stops by the garage sale.

Once we have officially started the adoption process there are grants available that we can also apply for and we fully intend to do that. If you have any fundraising ideas I would love to hear them, even if they are not related to adoption.  Anything that has or has not worked out for you in the past.

The Adoption Project

So, I started a new blog called The Adoption Project.  The purpose of the blog is to chronicle Eric and I’s journey through the adoption process.  I am also hard at work creating a new Etsy shop called Bows for Adoption, which is to help raise the funds needed to cover the costs of adoption.  I want to keep both of these things separate from my regular Etsy shop and sewing blog.  Please consider supporting our adoption by following along on this blog as well.  Thank you!

A little about us

Hi! We are Eric and Sarah Clevenger. We have been together for just over 10 years and married since 2007.  We met during Sarah’s freshman year of college at Ball State University.  Sarah was studying Apparel Design and Eric was studying Philosophy.  Initially, we were just friends, but quickly realized there was something else there.  We became engaged after just over a year of dating.  We then remained engaged until Sarah finished school in 2006 and we moved to the Chicago suburbs with two of our closest friends.  You’ll meet them later.  We have never really done anything the traditional way, whatever that is.  Being just out of school and moving to a new city with little money we decided to elope!  It was the most amazing decision.  Sarah made her dress and veil.  We went to downtown Chicago with our two friends in tow as our “witnesses”.  We will never forget that day.  After the ceremony we went to eat a delicious meal at Weber Grill, then proceeded to go to the Museum of Science and Industry.  While at the museum we noticed that they were preparing to hold a wedding ceremony.  Everyone that worked there would stop us and ask if we were the couple getting married there.

We stayed in the Chicago area for just under two years before moving back to Indiana.  It was fun while it lasted but we knew it was time to settle down, so we moved back to Eric’s hometown to be near his family.  We haven’t regretted it one minute.  We know that we have a wonderful support system here and this is where we want to raise our children.  We purchased our first house in 2010 and have been hard at work to turn it into our family home.

 We have always known that we wanted to have a family someday thinking that, like most people, when the time was right we would just get pregnant.  Some things just don’t always work out the way you had thought they would and this was one of them for us.  After four years of trying to get pregnant, and no luck, we were faced with a decision. We could either pay, out of pocket, for infertility treatments with no guarantee they would work or we could adopt and be guaranteed to end up with our child. Now both options would cost us roughly the same amount of money. The decision was not a hard one to make. We had always talked about wanting to adopt at some point, so it was easy to see the path we should be on.

After making that initial decision, then came the task of finding the right agency. That actually also came pretty easy. We talked to several people about the pros and cons of an open adoption vs. closed adoption, overseas adoption vs. domestic adoption. In the end we have decided to do a domestic open adoption through Independent Adoption Center (IAC). Everything about this non-profit organization is exactly what we were looking for. There will be more to come on how we reached these decisions in later posts.

We want to use this blog as a way to document our adoption journey for ourselves, our family and our future children.  We are starting at the very beginning right now.  We know that there will be a lot of waiting in our future and we want to share our story with others that may be going through the same process.  Along the way we will introduce you to our families and friends.  Sarah will be the one doing most, if not all, of the blogging from here on.

Better Late Than Never

This past month has been so incredibly busy I have not had time to sew for myself let alone think about posting anything exciting.  But work has slowed down a bit and I should be able to start sewing for myself again.  The only thing I sewed so far this year is and outfit I wore last Friday to the Super Bowl Village.  I work and live a very convenient drive from downtown Indy, so I was excited to get to go to the Super Bowl Village.  Last Friday LMFAO was giving a free concert and everyone I work with decided to go!
 Don’t we all look awesome!

 The Village was p-a-c-k-e-d!  So packed in fact that we never made it to the concert because police started turning people away.  That being said we still had an amazing time!

This is what I wore.  The jacket I bought at Meijer and added hot pink around the collar, neon green zebra down the arms and the back says “I Work Out”.  The leggings are McCall’s 6173, made from wet look spandex.  The shirt is using the same fabric and the pattern is OOP McCall’s 5520.  For the top I eliminated the seam that went across the center, which would have cut my upper torso in half.  It worked out nicely.  The skirt is a refashion from a previous dress that was cut off to make a top.  I also made the hair-bow, it is stuffed with tulle to give it some body.  All in all I loved wearing this!  I can’t say I will wear this outfit together ever again but I may wear each piece individually.  I did not purchase any new fabrics for this, nor did I use anything from my stash.  Everything came from scrap fabrics at work.
