Day 213: Roll Out!

Musings of a Seamstress

This is how I left the house this morning.

This is how I spent half the work day.

Today at work we got a large shipment of fabric.  So large, it arrived on a cargo freight truck.

We are talking 726 rolls which each had an average of 50 yards on them kinda large.  I got quite the work out moving unloading and unpacking the boxes.  Also super dirty, if you couldn’t tell from my picture above.  Ahh…always an interesting work day.

Day 69

Writing about my outfit everyday is kinda weird after awhile.  I feel like I don’t ever have anything witty to say!  So, I guess let’s talk about fabric today!!  Which really isn’t different from any other day around here, but we will go with it anyways.  Yesterday I promised to show my lovely new purchases.  Here they are in all their glory.

M6517

First up is 4yards of this lace printed plastic!  It’s kinda like a shower curtain liner.  It was $3.00 a yard in Jo-Ann’s red tag section.  I fully intend to use it for a raincoat.  More specifically McCall’s 6517, the red one with the hood. I have had this pattern for a bit now and just waiting for the right fabric.  I am thinking that I might add black binding to all the seams to give it a little more pizazz.

The fabric that I am more excited about is 3 yards of this amazing neon yellow stretch denim! This is to make my skinnies like the ones pictured on the raincoat pattern.  They are on my 2013 spring trends must try list.  After seeing Katie’s version of V8330 I definitely wanted those, but the pattern is OOP and I don’t have it!   I was thinking M6610 might work but the pictures make them look a lot looser than I would prefer.  I am also considering V8774.  It has quite a few reviews on PR and they are full of very helpful information about the construction and fit!  I am also considering the Sandra Narrow Leg Jean from StyleArc.  Anyone have experience with 2 or 3 of these and have a preference?

Day 67: Oh for the love of fabric

Today was a pretty great day at work!  I successfully drafted a new legging pattern for our 2013-2014 catalog.  And by successfully, I mean that they conveniently fit me perfectly. They are even wilder than yesterday’s Oonapants, so look for me to wear them sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Also, because we have just wrapped up our busy season we are heavy into cleaning!  As a result I have another TWO boxes of fabric.  The big box is full of large swatches that I will use for bows.  The smaller is full of other scraps for bows.  This last week of cleaning has taught me that I have absolutely no will power when it comes to fabric!  Just sayin!  I need to spend the night cleaning my sewing room.

Last night before I went to bed I cut out a second pair of modified Oonapants.   The first picture is them folded in half and the second is spread flat.  Notice how shapely they look?  Because I really want them to always fit like the polka dot pair and I have a feeling I will be making several more pairs I went ahead and made a paper pattern.  This is big for me!  I am typically too lazy to want to take the time to do that.  I mean, I am the girl who is refusing to get a Burda subscription because regardless of how wonderful I may think the pattern is I will never trace them off.  Bleh!  At any rate I am going to try to get this latest version done tonight.

Day 64

Charming Charlie necklace
Today I decided to combine red and turquoise.  I have been loving this color combination for the last couple of years now but have never worn it.  I quite like it!
I don’t know about all of you out there in blogland but here in Indiana we are getting hit with another winter storm tonight and tomorrow!  I am less than thrilled.  My office decided to shut down for tomorrow just in case, so I plan on getting some sewing done.  Which is probably a good thing considering I brought home more fabric from work today.  Really I need a 12 step program for my fabric addiction!  I just read Kristy, from Lower Your Presser Foot’s, post about her fabric stash and I was nodding along with it yesterday!!  I was even trying to plan how to rearrange my room to be better organized.  I have been telling my self all year that I really do not need any more fabric and I cannot bring anymore home until I get some of it sewn up.  But, not even joking, I get heart palpitations when there is free fabric to be had!  I’ll say it once again,  I really do need a 12 step program.
2yd 30″ of red stretch gingham, 2.25 yds of black stretch gingham and 2 yds of stretch faux leather.
I am thinking a couple of swimsuits from the red, faux leather leggings with zippered ankles, and regular leggings with the black gingham.
Plus 4 grocery bags stuffed with discontinued swatches that are cut to the perfect bow making size.

Day 40

Pretty relaxing Saturday around here!  I haven’t done much of anything today even though I really wanted to get Eric’s vest finished.  Maybe tomorrow.

Yesterday I forgot to show you all the new lovely fabrics I got from work!  Cause, you know,  I really need more fabric in my life! :)

First up is 3/4 of a yard of this very colorful zebra sequin on spandex!  I feel I have a niece that may desire just such a tutu!

Next up, 1.75 yards of yellow with black polka dot and 1.25 yards nude.  Both are swimwear spandex and will be used as such.  Anybody want a teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini?  I think I need to make on with this but definitely not for myself!

Hope you all have a happy Saturday!

Stash Busting Sewalong

Well so far I am not doing so great!  I haven’t made anything yet with my stash fabrics!  However I have purchased several new pieces to add to the stash.  I will preface this by saying that all of these fabrics were purchased because I had $90 worth of Jo-Ann’s giftcards.  That makes it better, right?  Right?!?  Too bad not of this will count towards my fabric usage  goals this year.  Oh well.

First up I purchased 3 yards of each of these last Saturday.  I am in LOVE with that striped floral!  I cannot decide what it wants to be yet, leggings and a top or a long sleeve slim dress or a maxi or a sleeveless dress.  The navy in the middle was to replace the skirts that were too short on my adoption dress but now I think I am okay with how short they are.  I think I may just make a 3rd adoption dress out of it just in case.  The last is a pink and gray floral stretch.  I think this is definitely going to be a maxi since the print is large.

I went back to Jo-Ann’s on Wednesday to get a zipper and a pattern for the 1950′s dress I am making a friend.  I walked out with a 4 extra patterns, only 2 are for me and the other 2 are possibilities for the pageant dress, and 5.5 yards of fabric. The purple, yellow and blue is stretch and only a 1 yard cut.  The leopard floral is 2 yards of sweater knit.  I think it will make a fabulous cardi!  The brown at top has a iridescent green thread woven in and I got 2.5 yards of it.  I have been spying this fabric for a couple of weeks now and kept thinking I don’t need it.  But then I saw Katie’s Vogue 8330 skinny jeans and I knew I had to make them in this fabric!  So that will be coming up soon.  On the flip-side of that I keep thinking of other pieces I would want made out of this and now feel like I need another 7 yards of it.  The other pieces I am thinking of include a casual jacket, a tailored skirt, shorts, a fitted peplum top and a tailored sheath dress.  But really, how much is too much of one fabric? Do I really need a whole capsule wardrobe out of this one fabric?

Pj Pants and Pretty things

I have about 5 or so different posts brewing in my head with no time to write them.  So this will be quickish as I have to get back to my Christmas sewing!  December 1st was a rough day emotionally and I don’t really want to talk about it on here but as a result I decided I needed to do something quick and easy for me.  So I used my TNT pj pants pattern and made myself 3 pairs just in time for the snow to start falling.  I used a total of 7.5 yards of comfy cozy flannel from my stash! I do have one other top that I made myself for Thanksgiving that I have yet to photograph.  It would be one of the posts I have written in my head. Hopefully, soon I will get some pictures.

Oh sparkly!

Other than those things I started a new seamstress job at the end of October that has been keeping me busy.  It is for another show choir apparel manufacturer.  Everything here is cut by machine directly from the rolls of fabric.  Once the roll gets down to a yard or two they can’t run it through the machine. As a result I am once again ending up with lots of remnant and fabrics. Here are a few of the goodies I have scored so far.

Some more sequins, swimwear fabrics and illusion net fabrics.

Argyle sweater knit and funky 60′s print swimwear.
To date I have added an additional 25 yards and I have only been working there for a month and a half.  I think this is going to be a problem.  I may also need a fabricaholics anonymous group.
